Types of Headaches
There are more than 150 types of headaches, which fall into two main categories: primary and secondary.
Headache Causes
Primary headaches are those that aren’t caused by another medical condition. These include:
- Migraine
- New daily persistent headaches (NDPH)
- Tension headaches
Secondary headaches result from another medical condition, which may include:
- Head injury
- High blood pressure (hypertension)
- Infection
- Medication overuse
- Sinus congestion
- Trauma
- Tumour
Tension Headaches
Most headaches we see at SpinePro Chiropractic are tension headaches. These originate in the neck due to poor posture. When your neck is in a forward position for too long, it puts tension on the neck, which leads to neck pain and tension headaches.
We assess your spine to determine the underlying cause of your headache, then do specific adjustments to correct the spinal alignment. We will also make recommendations about posture and exercises to restore correct posture, strengthen the muscles around the spine, and retrain the body to hold this correct posture.
What is the difference between a headache and a migraine?
While postural problems can cause headaches or medical conditions, migraines often have a specific trigger. This trigger may be stress, particular foods or hormonal issues. Unlike headaches, migraines are often accompanied by visual disturbances and intolerance of light and sound.
When should I seek immediate care for a headache?
If you have a headache that is unusually severe or gradually worsens, you should seek attention. You also need immediate care if your headache follows a blow to the head or is accompanied by fever, stiff neck, confusion, decreased alertness, or memory loss.
